The Oklahoma City Thunder seem to be finally ready to start building toward postseason contention after another fruitful NBA summer.
The Thunder will certainly have their work cut out for them next season in an always congested Western Conference, but with rising superstars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luguentz Dort leading the way, things are beginning to look bright for them.
Following an eventful draft night in which Josh Giddey, Tre Mann, and Aaron Wiggins were chosen, the Thunder are now attempting to assemble a squad capable of making a deeper playoff run in the 2021-22 NBA season. Especially after acquiring some solid depth in the NBA Free Agency season of 2021. After all of that, let’s take a look at the grades for each of Oklahoma City’s offseason free agent acquisitions.
Acquisitions by Thunder:
Forward/In the Middle Favors, Derrick:
Derrick Favors was a smart decision for the Thunder, who needed more experienced leadership and excellent depth in their frontcourt. His ability to rebound, block shots, and flourish in the pick-and-roll game will help this young Thunder team tremendously. He’d also provide Oklahoma City a solid locker room presence and a seasoned veteran who could teach Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luguentz Dort, the team’s budding talents.
The Thunder have acquired a great veteran with a lot of playoff experience who can help them create something special in Oklahoma City in their quest to return to postseason prominence. Favors also gives the Thunder a multi-talented big man, something they desperately needed in their frontcourt.
Mike Muscala, power forward/center:
Mike Muscala’s return was another excellent move for the Thunder, particularly with his inside-out style of play, which creates mismatches for opposing teams and enables him to generate more scoring chances for his teammates. In addition to Derrick Favors’ signing, Muscala provides them additional frontcourt depth.
Muscala’s re-signing offers the Thunder another talented big man to help spread the floor and enhance ball movement on a squad that is stocked with scoring, agility, and quickness on the wing and in the backcourt. The Thunder will be in excellent shape going into next season, as they will need all the manpower they can get to get through a difficult and gritty Western Conference. With Muscala’s multi-faceted scoring touch and rebounding, the Thunder will be in good shape.
Both of these free agency acquisitions have been important for the Thunder now that they have a good young core consisting of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort, Darius Bazley, Theo Maledon, and Moses Brown. The Thunder have had a very successful summer, particularly after selecting Josh Giddey, Tre Mann, and Aaron Wiggins.
All of them may be crucial to the Thunder’s playoff quest next season, while also providing even more youth and athleticism to the team. With all of this in mind, Derrick Favors and Mike Muscala offer Oklahoma City with a better frontcourt with greater size, scoring, and rebounding, as well as much-needed depth and leadership for the next NBA season.
