Ilja Dragunov put his place in the history books at NXT TakeOver 36, capping off an amazing weekend of wrestling with a spectacular performance.
Unbesiegbar met WALTER in a violent and highly anticipated rematch in an empty BT Sport Studio months after their first NXT United Kingdom Championship fight.
They faced off in front of a raucous audience at the Capitol Wrestling Center in Orlando, Florida on Sunday night, in a bout that may be a contender for match of the year for WWE’s UK brand.
WALTER and Ilja put up a fantastic show – perhaps the finest of the weekend – by dishing out some heavy pain to each other and exceeding already lofty expectations.
Dragunov not only won, but he did so decisively, as the champion tapped out to end his 870-day reign as champion.
Bravo to both guys for standing out in the midst of a loaded deck that signaled the end of an era for the black and gold brand.
Starting with a great opening match that saw Cameron Grimes – assisted by Ted DiBiase – beat LA Knight to win the Million Dollar Championship, everyone performed in a major manner today.
The NXT Women’s Championship was also on the line, as Raquel Gonzalez retained her title by defeating Dakota Kai, a longtime friend turned adversary.
She didn’t have to wait long to find out who her next opponent would be, with former NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray arriving to a standing ovation and focusing her attention on Gonzalez right away.
News from the United States of America
Following Ilja’s big moment, it was time for a two-out-of-three-falls battle between ex-Undisputed Era colleagues Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly, with O’Reilly taking the first fall until Cole knotted things up in a nasty Street Fight round.
After that, a cage was lowered and both men went to battle, and the fight ended with Kyle forcing his old friend to surrender despite having one arm tied to the cage itself.
Finally, in a spectacular main event, Samoa Joe made his return to the ring and defeated Karrion Kross with a Muscle Buster to win the NXT Championship for a record-breaking third time.
